Fandom Snowflake Challenge #9 - Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works.

I'd say my all time favorite trope is Found Family. So much of my favorite media centers around people who don't fit in and feel alone until they meet their people. Sense8 is probably the best Found Family dynamic I've ever come across, but things like Our Flag Means Death (and coincidentally a fair amount of queer media) also fit the mold. I'm also really into the Grumpy/Sunshine or Golden retriever/Black cat dynamic, and I loooove seeing the wholesome sweet ones absolutely LOSE THEIR SHIT protecting their loved ones.

Oh yes, Found Family is a lovely trope. OFMD was a great example of this. I must write more of these fics though.

I miss OFMD so much. I haven't really gotten into fanfic for it, but there was a great one I read about Stede recruiting everyone for the original crew. LOOOOVE me some missing scene fics as well.

Yes, I was so sad it got cancelled. If only they'd allowed the full 3 season story arc, it would have been great. I was in the process of writing a fic about Ed and Stede running the Inn together, but I lost all inspiration when it was cancelled 🥹

There are some really great OFMD fics though, well worth reading. Lots of missing scenes, AUs etc.

Hopefully you get the inspiration back. I'm glad it felt like somewhat of an ending even though I would've loved to see what happens next.

Cancellations are so brutal. It's a wonder people don't want to bother watching a show anymore and getting attached, which of course leads to the viewership numbers not being what our media overlords want and therefore it gets canceled after one season. I've introduced several people to Sense8 and had to assure them there was an actual wrap up to the series before they even started.

You're totally right: people don't bother getting caught up in a show as it could be cancelled any minute. I've been rewatching old shows recently, from the 1970s and 80s because I know they get a satisfying ending, usually. And weren't cancelled after one season.

What's Sense8 about? I get the idea it's based on AI and computers, but I bet I'm wrong!😅

I think part of it is that after two seasons the royalties go up significantly for the cast and crew, so that tends to be when they pull the plug.

Oooh I actually did a pimp about this for smallfandomfest. There are computer hackers but no AI. It's about eight strangers around the world who are suddenly connected and can share each other's experiences. Sense8 was one of the first high-profile shows Netflix canceled but fans rallied to get them to give it a proper ending. When OFMD was canceled fans tried using that same model (me included) but alas HBO wouldn't budge.

Your short description of Sense8 made me think it isn't my thing, but when I read your pimp it sounds much better! R, my husband watched it, but I didn't...so maybe I should! lol.

Yeah it's hard going off just the plot since so much of it is focused on the characters and human connection. Definitely give it a try if you're into found family and queer media.

Found Family is a really important trope for all of us, I think, and even more so for the queer people who didn't have much of a choice but for Found Family. I'm so glad there are other people who use the trope and make those kinds of works. The lengths that they'll go to in service of protecting of their Found Family is often awesome and sometimes very, very violent.

I don't often look for Found Family stuff anymore because of people trying to force nuclear family dynamics on it but it still gets me every time, especially in queer or other "outsider" stories.

Sense8 was like Found Family with the dial turned all the way up to 11 (its years since I watched it, but the contrasts between birth family and found family, particularly for Nomi and Kala and Sun were *chef's kiss*).
