This isn't fandom related, but Zooniverse is a cool site where you can contribute your time online to research. They have a bunch of different projects like counting birds or the infamous fish doorbell.

It does! It's an underwater camera where volunteers can "ring the doorbell" when fish are present so the gate is opened for their migration.

what a neat idea! i read about the fish doorbell somewhere and always meant to check it out but never did, so this might be a sign from the universe that i should do that.

Awesome! There's a whole bunch of projects that change depending on the need/season. I've counted penguins and the bands on bird legs, as well as done the fish doorbell. It's a good way to kill time.
